Our partnerships and advocacy activities

Integrated Reporting Committee of South Africa (IRC): The IRC was established in May 2010 to develop guidelines on good practice in integrated reporting.  Its members include the Association for Savings  & Investment South Africa (ASISA), Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa (IoDSA), JSE Ltd, the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), the Banking Association of South Africa (BASA) and the Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa (CSSA). Jonathon is an expert member of the Working Group to the IRC, where he contributed to the drafting of the Discussion Paper on Integrated Reporting and the Integrated Report.

The International Integrated Reporting Committee (IIRC): Formed in July 2010, the IIRC brings together the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), International Accountings Standards Board (IASB), UNEP Finance Initiative, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), The Prince’s Accounting for Sustainability Project, UN Global Compact, Carbon Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB), International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSC), and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The IIRC has been established to respond to the need for a concise, clear, consistent and comparable integrated reporting framework. Jonathon is a member of the Examples Advisory Group to the IIRC.

ISO 26000: In November 2010 the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) launched one of its most eagerly awaited standards: ISO 26000, an international guidance standard on social responsibility. The standard reflects the outcome of a five-year process of building consensus among more than 450 expert representatives from six different stakeholder groups and 99 countries. The new standard seeks to encourage the implementation of best practice on social responsibility amongst all types of organisations, with the explicit goal of promoting sustainable development. Jonathon was convenor of the multi-stakeholder drafting team responsible for co-ordinating the drafting of the standard, and he chaired the associated multinational negotiation sessions.

Carbon Disclosure Project: Based in the UK, the CDP is the world’s largest institutional investor collaboration on the business implications of climate change. Incite brought the CDP initiative to South Africa in partnership with the National Business Initiative (NBI). Incite authored the 2008, 2009 and 2010 South African CDP reports, which survey the top 100 companies listed on the JSE.

National Business Initiative: The NBI is a business membership organisation that seeks to promote sustainable development in South Africa. It serves as the regional branch of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the local focal point for the UN Global Compact. We partner with the NBI for the purposes of the CDP. Jonathon was invited to serve on the advisory board to the NBI’s Sustainable Futures Unit.

UCT Graduate School of Business: Both Jonathon and Nicola are visiting lecturers at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate Business School, where they teach MBA and Executive MBA students on sustainability strategy and related issues. They have also contributed to courses and related events at the business schools of the University of Stellenbosch (USB) and Pretoria (GIBS), as well as to the development and delivery of executive seminars and practitioner training courses for the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership.
