Incite authors the 2009 South African Carbon Disclosure Report

Incite MD Jonathon Hanks spoke at the launch of the third annual Carbon Disclosure Project Report, in Cape Town, 21 October 2009.

Incite authored the report, which surveyed the top 100 companies listed on the JSE, in partnership with NBI. Companies were asked to measure and disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and report on their strategy for dealing with risks and opportunities associated with climate change. (See www.cdproject.net). The response rate increased this year to 68%, up from 59% in 2008, with 87% of respondents also disclosing their greenhouse gas emissions, up from 77% in 2008.

Although South Africa's top companies are increasingly measuring and disclosing their GHG emissions, the findings indicate that there remains a lack of ambition when it comes to setting emission reductoin targets.

In the report, Envronmental Affairs Minister Buyelwa Sonjika says that, as a high carbon emitter, South Africa has the responsibility to demonstrate leadership on the continent,  which must be accompanied by target setting, measurement and verification of performance. She added that GHG emission reportng would soon be made mandatory, with penalties for noncompliance.

The report aims to contribute towards providing South African investors and policy makers with access to reliable information on the potential business implications of climate change - and on the extent of individual company exposure. It also aims to stimulate a more informed discussion on climate change within the South African financial and business community and within the media. (Click here to download the full report).
