Climate risks and opportunities

In partnership with UK consulting firm Irbaris, we recently completed a report for Investec that looks at the impact of climate change on shareholder value in SA. Under the leadership of Malcolm Gray (Investec Asset Management IAM Portfolio Manager for responsible investment), and working with independent consultant William Frater, the study included an active process of discussion and debate with the IAM investment team, moving beyond simply providing a report for internal and external distribution.

Released at a media briefing in Johannesburg on 23 November 2011, Climate Change and Shareholder Value makes a compelling case that climate change is a critical business and investment issue, and it provides a detailed analysis of the principal risks and opportunities that climate change presents for South African companies in ten key sectors. The research offers a methodology to help investors and analysts assess the implications for shareholder value of climate change and other broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.

More information can be found on Investec’s website and by watching Malcolm Gray talking about sustainable investing with examples from the platinum, telecoms, construction and food retail sectors here.
